Hate speech being censored online. Where should the line be drawn?

How is the determination made regarding what thoughts, ideas, or groups are considered dangerous or terroristic?

At what point do words cross the line from just being stupid to being dangerous?

the- Trump election protest rally, by claiming it was an organized terrorist rally or some garbage like that.
Do you suppose they'll use this tactic to find out who was at the Nazi rally on Saturday?
I'm thinking no.
What a meltdown yesterday. Truly presidential.
There's a lot of garbage piling up on both sides of the curb.

The both sides false equivalency bullshït
Never said they were equal, only one side killed a person that day. Violent rhetoric and bs philosophy < violent action and bs philosophy
I think it's a classic example of poor management from the top down. Like any company, the culture is typically an expression of the leaders mentality.

To me, the use of a government warrant to out political enemies and obtain an understanding of their thoughts and opinions is far more disturbing than the outright racist sympathies expressed by POTUS.
Made possible by Obama policies regarding domestic surveillance
Looks like Trump's peers are walking away... Bah, who needs advice anyway!

Clinton was pretty good uniter, obvious jokes aside.
But your attempt at deflection is exceedingly weak, pns, one might say pathetic.
You got nuthin.
one might say but you're not one so suck it
it's all a fūcking game if you just look at it. the dems stuck us with ocare. the repubs had 7 years to come up with something better. zilch.
now it's a race thing caused by the dems (gov and mayor) of Virginia. all anyone can talk about is trump.
just look past the obvious and see the people in charge (local, state and federal ) for what they are.
all and all we're just another brick in the wall
Haha man you really got nothing. It's pathetic.
It's shameless the way you two flirt.

If that's the best you can gin up, pns, I suggest you return to finish your grade school level education.
Fact is that only one of those stupid evil politicians is POTUS. That person represents YOU. You, pns. Your deflection doesn't change anything. Obama ain't POTUS dummy.
Same for congress. It's your congress, you are them and they are you. Give your lazy brain some exercise for once, maybe you'll come up with a legitimate point.
I don't think we should be tearing down monuments so quickly, why not commission a new monument next to it as an "ammendment?"
Quogue, NY, USA
What if this were Germany and the discussion was about monuments to Hitler, Drew? Would an amended monument be ok?
I know this is theoretical... There are no monuments to Hitler in Germany. Hmmm wonder why, are they denying German history? If so, I'd say the approach didn't work very well.
Despite there being no monuments to Hitler (or any Nazi war heroes) in Germany, seems to me that no one, even in America, has forgotten either him or the Nazis.
What if they built a taller statue of Obama next to the existing statue, looking down on it with his arms crossed?
Maybe, of Obama was also pissing on it.
... and wearing a big shít-eating grin while doing it.
Yeah, fun to fantasize but in the real world, its really just something long overdue and we sorely need to move past it. Get them gone, why give those generals any honor?
I have a better idea. Hold silent auctions on the monuments. The proceeds go directly to fund learning materials for the 3 poorest school districts in each respective state.
The owner of the winning bid can choose to donate to a museum, destroy it
Northlake, IL, USA
Or place it in their front yard
are we now comparing Robert e Lee to Hitler?
if so, then Washington, Jefferson, Grant,,,,, etc are in deep shìt
take em all out
let's go to Europe and get them too
what is your line in the sand?

hell, we lost Vietnam, bulldoze that loser wall
Korea? loser memorials
come on, pyramids built with slave labor,,,,, wrecking ball damnit
I really thought we got headway as a nation with integration and racial harmony in the 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's,.
WHAT THE FÙCK HAPPENED?
now we're going to start over and use a stronger cleaner
Washington, Jefferson built the country. They were flawed, for sure, but they never took part in any attempt to destroy the union. I'd say that is an easily defined line in the sand.
okay; updated banned list:
1: any and all confederate relics; to include clothing, flags, battlefield souvenirs
2: any and all memorials, statues, books that favorably reference a confederate
3: all confederate battlefield markers
The perticipants in Korea and Viet Nam fought in the name of the country. Not against it.
You mean they don't have a statue of MacArthur in North Korea?
If you can't see any way to differentiate those soldiers from the leaders of the confederacy I doubt you are really trying.
4. class 2 felony charges for anyone caught dressed as a confederate
5: reconstruction of all civil war battlefields, remove all "confederate" reference and replace with "enemy"
6: remove major signage & markers at confederate cemeteries.
Additionally, I don't believe that any memorials to the fallen confederate soldiers are under attack. It's just a matter of questioning whether any American should be idolizing the leaders of a failed military uprising.
Had they won, they could build all the monuments they wanted. But that wasn't the case. To the victor go the spoils. And the right to write history.
There are plenty of memorials that honor the fallen of both sides. Those were intended to foster the healing of the nation. Lincoln pardoned the confederate soldiers in an attempt to advance the healing. It was the "The South shall rise again"
crowd that erected those monuments. It was an attempt to salvage their dignity. But it only perpetuated the division. It is time to remove those last vestiges of hate.
I think my silent auction idea is the best way to mend the divide.
does anyone really believe taking these monuments down / destroying them is going to heal this nation and eliminate the racism and hatred?
Some of those statues could be appropriately placed in museums. Some even deserve placement in art museums.
What was going on locally when these monuments were erected?
In other words, at the time they were put up, were they really to commemorate the leaders or was it symbolism towards blacks.
No h2o, taking them down shows respect to enslaved Americans and their descendants.
And don't confuse discussion of government sponsored monuments with personal behavior control.
No one has a problem with headstones or historical markers, detailing facts about people and events that happened. It's the elevation and celebration of those particular individuals that is so horrifying when you just stop and think about it.
Same with confederate flag displays, legitimized on government buildings. Individuals can do what they want... put the Lee statue in h2o's front yard for all I care.
Or.... They can be auctioned off voila the monuments are gone and the children benefit
I don't like the idea of ripping down history... And a lot of these were put up during Jim Crow.. But I feel like that's all the more reason to preserve (at least some) of them and contextualize.
I think depending on the specific monument it should either be taken down to museum, or left in place with a new monument and plaque explaining what was going on when the statue was put up.
I don't like the idea of completely whitewashing something bad that once was there.
At the very least every statue taken down ought to at least have a plaque mentioning what once stood on the site, where it's been placed, why it's been taken down.
Germany is a good example though cuz they took loads of approaches with this, sometimes taking down, sometimes adding to it, almost always leaving a plaque mentioning what once was there etc
So if that were a statue of Heinrich Himmler, Drew, that'd be ok by you?
Perhaps commissioning some kinda official defacement so you can see what was once there yet you know we're not celebrating anything, we're just remembering what once *was* sadly celebrated like a never again kinda thing
Also drew no one is whitewashing anything. These monuments are gratuitous celebrations, not historical markers. The Germans keep places like Dachau open for historical purposes. But no statues of Hitler. See the difference?
To me, its the celebration of these military generals that's a whitewashing of history, if there is any whitewashing being done.
Doc, how do you feel about the Joan of Arc statue being vandalized in New Orleans?
1st, the "majority" of these statues where erected between 1890 - 1950, to whitewash Jim crow politics.
2nd, there's no historical reasoning for them
3rd it is a political left theatrical show,, Trump & Russia fading
There is a sensible discussion revolving around the removal of Confederate monuments that will be hijacked by mindless angry drones
4th: it's not only soldiers statues, parks, schools, etc
5th: Washington & Jackson are currently being mentioned (see Chicago)
so my 2 questions remain
WHAT THE FÙCK HAPPENED to progress
does anyone really believe taking these monuments down/destroying them is going to heal this nation and eliminate the racism
I think there should be more of a discussion vs quickly ripping them away, but if they do choose to completely remove them, there should be a plaque of some kind showing the removal.
What about other historical figures though, King Leopold of Belgium, Cecil B Rhodes... I know those aren't our statues, though. There is something to the question of 'when does it end'
Statues will rise and statues will fall, new ones will rise in their place. It never ends. The heroes of Rome saw their monuments fall. What are we trying to preserve?
There are a lot of disgusting people exacting influence and deceit upon the lazy masses
Turn off the TV, stop reading your Breitbart and Salon and go out and talk to people
Maybe we wanna yank them down and make a cast of where they fall... I dunno.. Some kinda artistic defacement would be interesting.
Also Breitbart is probably gonna be interesting looking at just to see what Bannon is gonna stick on there now that he's been fired.
The ramblings of a scorned lover

I don't think anyone believes that taking those statues down will heal racism h2o. It's that leaving them up inflames racism.
Drew, you are doing a lot of what- abouting here, distracting from the issue at hand.
It's not distracting, I'm trying to find where the line exists... Is there one?
Also along the lines of what I said http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/history/2017/08/one_alternative_to_tearing_down_confederate_monuments_creatively_repurposing.html
