I find it amazing that the same people, who champion the "across state lines" theory as a way to foster competition, have no problem undermining "pre existing" protection.

Nothing ends competition like the pre existing clause. If you develop a serious illnes while covered, you just acquired your own personal monopoly. Free to charge whatever they like.

Well to be fair, people who champion the "across state lines" theory also have no idea what insurance networks are and how those affect local premiums.

didn't they originally have to use aca, but they came back later and exempted themselves? . not really 100%, but I'll refresh my memory next couple of days

H2O @ 2 months ago

Spotsylvania, VA 22553, USA

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

Not quite. Pre ACA, Congress and their staff, like most large employers, received (heavily) subsidized insurance through their employer.

Tjaden Froyda @ 2 months ago

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

Grassley added an amendment to force both Congress and their staffs into the individual market exchanges, where they'd lose the employer contribution they previously were getting. That amendment passed.

Tjaden Froyda @ 2 months ago

undefined

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

It was included as a part of the final law. OPM later released a rule giving those staffers the employer subsidy through the exchange. Congress still has to purchase their plans through the exchange and are treated

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

Differently than every other federal employee for that reason. Basically, they didn't exempt themselves because everyone else that gets insurance through their employer doesn't get it through the exchange.

Tjaden Froyda @ 2 months ago

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

The McArthur amendment was a bit different. One of the things that drive up premiums in some states was the essential coverage provisions (it actually had to cover stuff). The AHCA and BCRA gave states the ability to
