Should government food stamp or welfare programs be contingent upon a demand that the recipient work?

Georgia is reinstating the work requirement in 3 counties that had been put on hold during the Great Recession. The deadline is today.

The regulation will affect 6,102 able-bodied single adults receiving an average of $190 per month in federal food stamp benefits. That's $1,159,380 per month for just 3 Georgia counties.

I think the requirement is reasonable and should be mandatory across many other benefit programs. A work requirement was one of the pillars of "Racer X's Guide To Welfare Reform"

I would also at work kiosks. if someone is having issues becoming and staying employed there should be a outlet to still fill that requirement. there is enough grafitti and garbage to pick up

add a work kiosk. also larger projects like building high speed rail, a wall etc. could use that labor. attack and fix the program and how it works, not the people who have the misfortune of having to use it

Yeah after the next election we'll have more flexibility. I'm sure any program like this would create racial tension and cost more than it brings in

@don - the regulations Doug's like they're pretty flexible. "The requirements include: 1. The adults must demonstrate that they work 20 hours a week. 2. They can also be enrolled in an approved education or training program for 20 hours a week."

I think welfare to work is a shortsighted populist plan akin to drug testing welfare recipients. it doesn't solve anything and may end up costing more/not changing anything.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

see, because there are a lot of people on welfare who are chronically unemployable, so the program usually consists of member employers that will take these people for a much lower wage.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

so the employer gets subsidized labor costs for poor quality, low cost work.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

what this will usually end up doing is getting bureaucrats kicking people off the welfare rolls because they "made too much money in a given time frame" as decided by unclear rules.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

this is an automatic loss of incentive and you wind up with 2 parties subscribed to a program that has no benefits any longer.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

for a welfare to work program you must have a continuous cooperation until that person is out of poverty, which would take so long the state would not have the patience for it anymore.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

ive never understood why welfare is so demonized, sure its "free money for nothing" but giving a homeless person $1 doesn't make that man the luckiest son of a bitch to ever exist, hes still homeless.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

many people may seem proud to be on welfare, but they know deep down inside that its a source of shame. maybe people with no shame don't but then they have no money and no shame.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

see, nobody is living high on the hog on welfare, they are getting barely enough to get by, and even if they do nothing for it, it doesn't get them anywhere.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

and maybe that's why the system is perpetual, because mandated minimum's and maximums and that keep people in that system don't encourage people to actually get off.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago

undefined

A39f5aef0adb6cea421f333e4cc9b583

if you make $10 an hour and have to support 4 people by yourself you get welfare to supplement it, but then you get a raise to 11, and get kicked off, then you are making considerably less than before.

[412035] @ almost 2 years ago
