Once they allowed any wad with a vendetta to propose ballot initiatives with a $200 fee and a few signatures, couldn't you just see things were going to go here?

Obviously some sort of stunt (probably left wing) $200 is reasonable seeing as you must obtain 365,000 signatures in 180 days. $8000 is definitely unnecessary.

I posted this a few days ago "only in California?" I agree it is likely a stunt...but it's kind of like a stress test for the system. I doubt this would get anywhere.

I'm glad you approve of all the government expenditures of taxpayer money being spent, Angilius. Being spent for...what?

If the system allows obviously unconstitutional proposals even to become ballot initiatives (any chance of passing aside), how much taxpayer money gets spent on the necessary mechanisms of the ballot initiative law, I wonder.

I thought you were a champion of democracy. What does it matter if the initiatives are unconstitutional? Are you claiming there are significant costs associated with placing the initiative on the ballot, or are the costs associated with the

The ability to get frivolous initiatives on the ballot is a government granted delegation of congressional power. And it is costing taxpayers dearly...in general, and by this lawsuit necessitated by it. The whole thing is a mistake imo.

Nice to see experimentation in the states. I'd say this particular experiment is over. Now we know what to not do.

We have a representative government system for a reason, idiots. Instead of circumventing it, while still paying the dumbasses in Congress, why not work within it. It has, in fact, been done.

by the way Angilius, preventing an unconstitutional law from being given effect isn't disenfranchisement of the people. It is protection of the bedrock principles of our republic.

i thought this could be a subversive left wing person myself until i read that he also tried to make the bible mandatory reading in california in 2006, too far apart for a spur of the moment thing.

this isn't about constitutionality, the measure cannot be accepted regardless because it is murder, nobody would allow it. arguing legalese about it is besides the point. also, i thought that was against the bible.

California's state gov itself made this an avenue by which citizens could legislate. There's nothing being circumvented here. It's not costing taxpayers anything. The officials contesting the initiative were already on the state's payroll. Besides,

I don't believe the initiative has any chance of passing. If you were sincerely concerned about governance you would know democracy is the absolutely worst form of government. Furthermore, you'd be protesting this government daily.

Why don't you tell Obama about all his unconstitutional executive orders? It's weird what you choose to take issue with. You're conditioned to only respond when the stimuli mentions sexual orientation, abortion or whatever keywords they've programmed

And in case you are wondering, I've stated at least once on this forum my shock and disgust for the illegal execution of US citizens...abroad, at least as far as we know...by the Obama administration.

I've also stated my opposition to laws like the PATRIOT Act, which opened the doors to the overreaching (even under that law!) spying activities of the NSA on its own citizens. The revelations of Ed Snowden were no surprise to me, but confirmation.
