I've read where it's similar to a peer to peer network. Which I am familiar with. Where a "super user" keeps a sort of menu of available items and points you to where you want to connect to directly. How far off am I?

There's two main parts to the ecosystem - the blockchain (publicly shared ledger) and the bitcoins (tokens of value, all transactions of these coins are recorded on the ledger).

Tjaden Froyda @ over 2 years ago

undefined

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

The coins are generated at a set rate and are distributed as a reward to computers that verify the public ledger by solving complex cryptographic problems. Included with the reward are transaction fees associated with

The MtGox situation kinda tells me this isnt as secure as some would lead you to believe. I can see the benefits (low cost, ease of use, anonymity) but the risk seems great. From an outsiders view.

Taco Bowl @ over 2 years ago

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

MtGox's security lapses were not related to the bitcoin protocol, though. Most of the exchange collapses have occurred because the exchange itself had programming flaws that were exploited.

The backend of Bitcoin seems very interesting.. Since it lowers transaction costs by so much. But why is the 'bitcoin' part necessary for that, couldn't that work with any currency?

The Drew @ over 2 years ago

B35527b232c45def78db4f6949419182

It could. The Bitcoin is just a reward given to the entities verifying the transaction ledger. There's no reason the reward couldn't be tied to a physical denomination. In fact, some altcoins are (ie NuBits)
