Bam's resuming relations with Cuba. Good idea, bad idea? I'm personally unsure.

"resuming relations" can mean a lot of things. either way, what's the reason not to?

I'm in the "generally a good thing" camp. We get those poor starving bastards hooked on McDonalds, and watch communism disappear.

They'll flood the market with perfectly preserved 1950s era cars and world renowned cigars. I see no problem there! Once we get in there it will become another US vacation land though. We'll tear down everything and build McMansions. Bummer.

I don't have a problem with "resuming relationship" with Cuba. Some would like to severe ties forever, but if we can "resume relationships with Japan and Germany what makes Cuba any different? Nothing. Those countries both have harsher histories.

Cuba was doing OK as long as they had a sugar daddy. They lost the Russians only to be subsidized by Venezuela. Now the oil drop is threatening that relationship.

I believe we can either provide an economic relationship or wait for China to step in. Cuba is going to be somebody's step child for quite a while.

@Bankai.- the difference between Japan & Germany vs Cuba is the government type combined with a willingness to meet us on our terms.

Cuba is still being led by a communist regime that has little interest in caving to our demands.

Racer,,, They are no more communist than China. We seem to have no problem trading with them. Before the coup, corporate America found plenty of reasons to invest in Cuba.

China has a valuable resource. Cheap labor that brings products we desire to market. Not so with Cuba

A communist/capitalist Cuba is every bit as likely as the Chinese hybrid. Underground capitalism is already filling the gaps left by a failing govt system.

Our grudge goes back beyond that. When Castro took possession of all the American assets it put him on our naughty list. The bay of pigs was an attempt to regain our stuff.

The only people that will benefit with opening relationships are people in the government or the military. If Cuba changed to a democracy then it would make sense.
