It was discrimination when it was done with Jews, and it's discrimination now when it's being done with the Asians. http://mobile.nytimes.com/2014/11/25/opinion/is-harvard-unfair-to-asian-americans.html

It might be associated with the contribution rate of alumni. That's something I'm sure they track, but wouldn't advertise.

Well there's certainly some kinda soft quota going on.

Harvard also has such an absolutely massive endowment that they are not as reliant on yearly contributions like many other schools.

Maybe they feel if it starts looking like the university of Beijing, the ivy leaguers will go to Yale. It seems foolish to restrict the enrollment of overachievers.

Well Jc, all the ivy league schools seem to be doing similar stuff, their Asian % are basically flat despite the fact that a) # of college-aged Asians overall has gone up and b) those kids are getting academically better each year.

Suspiciously the lines also seem to converge as well. http://www.nytimes.com/roomfordebate/2012/12/19/fears-of-an-asian-quota-in-the-ivy-league/statistics-indicate-an-ivy-league-asian-quota

It's pretty clear that their "holistic admissions approach" or whatever cóckamamie term they use is simply a cover for some kind of soft quota formulae.

And there appears to be collusion with it as well.

What, privileged upper class whites, discriminating against others, in their own playground? Say it isn't so...

It's more important than you might think because these are the universities that generate our 'leaders' with all their fúckups...

Upper classes, whether based on birth or wealth, generally produce more halfwits than great leaders.

Drew,,, I'm not saying it isn't happening. I just can't see the logic in it. I'm sure the schools favor the offspring of alumni. That could account for part of it. And many schools "overweight" certain subject specific SAT scores.

You could have a great composit score. But without a raging math SAT subject test score, you can forget about MIT.

Jc, not only do the favor the alumni offspring, they also favor keeping the campus looking similarly to how the alumni remember.

That's why when the Asian percentage started going up 'too high' , all of a sudden in the next year you see it drop.

STEM schools like MIT are usually less focused on trying to micromanage the racial mix of the incoming kids, - - in Caltech, there's basically none of that due to California laws (something CA does correctly) and more objective nature of testing.
